May 12, 2008 By: Matt C. Category: Site News 4 Comments →

The latest issue of Extreme Fighter magazine hit the shelves a few weeks ago. In it you can read interviews with Dana White, UFC lightweights Frankie Edgar, and Kenny Florian. You can also catch an updated MMA Prospects authored by none other than Five Ounces of Pain’s Adam Morgan. That masterpiece can be found on page 40, just a few pages past the centerfold ring girl hottie Nicole. Adam will contribute to each issue of Extreme Fighter. Subscribe and find out more about Extreme Fighter HERE.

It’s a proud moment for the 5 Oz crew as not too many other MMA blogs can say their brand can be found in Barnes & Noble next to icon like titles Sports Illustrated and ESPN the mag.

Round 18 is in the can and ready for review.

In case you’re new to the site , you can re-live the glory of the previous rounds.

To make a long story short, this is not a pound-for-pound top fighter list. What we’re doing is essentially pretending that every fighter in the world is suddenly declared a free agent with six new organizations selecting talent through a draft format. The idea is to see how six different fans would construct their organization and which fighters they would select to help them execute their vision. Much like real world MMA, every promoter has their different philosophy with each organization establishing its own identity.

LeVon Maynard signs to fight Doug Gordon at Ring of Combat this Friday; 5 Oz. of Pain renews sponsorship

May 05, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Levon Maynard, Site News 14 Comments →

m_88f5474125cb346e11bcd2f85ad2f1d7.jpg5 Oz. of Pain featured MMA welterweight prospect LeVon Maynard has agreed to face Doug Gordon this Friday (May 9) during Ring of Combat XIX in Atlantic City, N.J. at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino.

5 Oz. is also pleased to announce that it has renewed its sponsorship of Maynard.

Maynard, who was 8-1 as an amateur, improved his pro record to 2-0 this past February when he submitted Jay R. Palmer with an armbar at 2:35 of round 1 during Combat Sports Challenge 23.

FiveOuncesOfPain.com was first introduced to Maynard while covering the IFL Draft tryouts in New York this past October. Maynard put on an outstanding display of grappling and striking skills en route to earning a berth on the league’s final list of draft-eligible fighters.

This website has shown a commitment towards providing exposure for young and up and coming MMA prospects since its inception. The decision to sponsor Maynard is an extension of that commitment. As a part of the agreement, Maynard will wear a 5 Oz. t-shirt during his cage-walk entrance.

Ring of Combat XIX is scheduled to be headlined by a USKBA middleweight title match between Nick Catone of Ricardo Almeida’s Jit-Jitsu Academy and Brett Linebarger of Daddis Fight Camps.

For more information on LeVon Maynard, you can click here to read about him in our MMA prospects section. You can also read our full bio on LeVon by clicking here.

5 Oz. of Pain on CBS Sports: Q&A with NFL player turned fighter Marcus Jones

May 02, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Site News 4 Comments →

five.jpgIn my latest column for CBSSports.com, I had the opportunity to interview one of the top heavyweight prospects in MMA, Marcus Jones.

If the name is familiar to you it’s because Jones was a former first round pick in the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a six-year career in the NFL, Jones decided to call it quits and eventually found his way into competitive mixed martial arts.

During the interview, Jones answered questions about how he feels about other NFL players in MMA i such as Johnnie Morton; his status as a member of Rob Kahn’s Gracie Tampa school; whether major promotions are trying to sign him; the differences between fighters and football players; and much more.

CLICK HERE to read the interview in its entirety on CBSSports.com.

EIGHTH ROUND of Five Ounces of Pain’s Fantasy MMA Mock Draft

April 30, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Site News 22 Comments →

mock_draft_logo5.jpg

When I came up with this draft concept, I thought it would be fun. However, I had no idea that the staff would be into it as they are. We’ve got one guy, Ram, who has created spreadsheets and metrics for his rankings. Then, we have another guy, Adam, who has assumed the role of impatient drafter who gets mad when someone filibusters before making a pick.

This draft is no joke. The staff of 5 Oz. has their game faces on and are sincere in their quest of wanting to walk away with the best roster of talent. Round eight is now done and available for your perusal.

Updated 5 Oz. Pound-for-Pound List

April 25, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: Site News 38 Comments →

php.jpg

I recently updated my personal top ten pound-for-pound list. You can check it out below:

  1. Georges St. Pierre - St. Pierre avenged his loss to Serra in their rematch at UFC 83 but completely dominating him, just as he completely dominated Josh Koscheck in August and Matt Hughes in December. It wasn’t easy choosing him for this spot over Anderson Silva but physically, I don’t believe St. Pierre has a weakness while I still have questions about Silva’s wrestling.
  2. Anderson Silva - Silva was in trouble vs. Travis Lutter at UFC 67. While he still won the fight, he hasn’t been as untouchable in the UFC as some would have you believe (although, he’s been pretty damn close). After a so-so performance vs. Lutter, all Silva did was come back with convincing wins over Nathan Marquardt, Rich Franklin, and Dan Henderson.
  3. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson - It’s been a long time since Jackson last fought but I’m not going to penalize him for the UFC’s decision to put him on the seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Coming off wins over Chuck Liddell and Dan Henderson, I feel this spot is justified.
  4. B.J. Penn - Penn hasn’t been the most active fighter in the world but he’s certainly been much more active than Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko, which is why I have moved him ahead of those two. His wins over Jens Pulver and Joe Stevenson were total domination and he’s slated to fight again in May. A strong win over Sean Sherk could move him ahead of Jackson.
  5. Randy Couture - Inactivity is a growing concern and if Fedor had beaten a more credible opponent than Hong Man Choi, he would have supplanted Couture. “The Natural” hangs onto this spot for now, but if Emelianenko posts an impressive win over Tim Sylvia in July, it will be a non-brainer to move him ahead of Couture.
  6. Fedor Emelianenko - Does a win over Hong Man Choi qualify as activity? Technically it does but I will need to see him beat a credible opponent before moving him up. He’s scheduled to fight Tim Sylvia in July and Sylvia easily qualifies as Fedor’s toughest competition in nearly three years. Win or lose, Fedor’s ranking will not stay the same following that bout.
  7. Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto - Known for his amateur wrestling background, Yamamoto is also a threat with his hands. Following an impressive win over Rani Yahya on New Year’s Eve, it was easy to rank him here. What’s not so easy is figuring out what weight class to rank him in. Is he a featherweight, a bantamweight, or what?
  8. Urijah Faber - The knock against Faber is that outside of his most recent win over Jeff Curran, he hasn’t fought a lot of the top fighters in his weight class. Well, that might be true but Faber hasn’t tried to duck anyone. He’s fought whoever has been put in front of him and outside of Tyson Griffin, he’s beaten them. Now that the WEC is collecting featherweight talent, Faber is going to get the chance to beat the best of the best. I still feel strongly about this ranking because pure fighting ability should account for something, as well as his impressive win over Curran. And Faber will get another chance to beat a top featherweight when he fights Jens Pulver in June.
  9. Gesias “JZ Calvan” Calvancante - I’m a big fan of Calvancante’s but I had to take a hard look at his performance against Shinya Aoki during the first round of DREAM’s lightweight Grand Prix. Calvancante didn’t lose the fight, but he also didn’t win so I had to take that into account. Fortunately, Calvancante will get a chance to redeem himself in a rematch with Aoki.
  10. Miguel Torres - I had Matt Hughes in this spot before and I just didn’t feel right about it. The problem was, I didn’t know who else to rank ahead of him. And then I realize, Torres belongs in this spot. One of the most underrated fighters in the world, Torres has one of the most impressive records in MMA and is finally getting the notoriety he deserves in the WEC.

You can read my full rankings breakdown by each weight class by clicking here. They are the same rankings I submit each month to the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts.
