Ultimate Fighter set for another five seasons

July 07, 2008 By: Gary Herman Category: The Ultimate Fighter 22 Comments →

When Amir Sadollah beat C.B. Dollaway to win The Ultimate Fighter title, that made seven completed seasons of the reality show. Filming for season 8 with Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira as coaches has also wrapped up. The show is expected to debut sometime in September.

Now, we can expect many more seasons of the show to air in the future.

We will have twelve seasons of the Ultimate Fighter,” said Dana White, “We just finished shooting season 8.”

White still believes the show is great for grooming future UFC participants.

Ultimate Fighter is an amazing training camp for up and coming fighters,” said White.

With ratings continuing to drop over the past few seasons, it will be interesting to see if serious changes are made with the format. Besides format changes, The Ultimate Fighter needs to bring in higher caliber fighters. The UFC may be forced to spend more money to bring the guys in, but better talent will create better fights which will create better ratings.

Also, with Forrest Griffin winning the most coveted title in the UFC - the light heavyweight championship, I am interested to see if ratings go up based on Griffin’s win. Griffin’s victory definitely validated the credibility of the show. The victory proved that investing our time in the fighters can have a big-time payoff down the line.

Mac Danzig Interview

November 10, 2007 By: Ben Fowlkes Category: The Ultimate Fighter, UFC 4 Comments →

By Ben Fowlkes

Recently, thanks to Crave Online, I got to interview Ultimate Fighter contestant Mac Danzig. After following his career the last few years and watching him on the show, I can’t really say I was surprised that he turned out to be a very articulate and interesting guy. Danzig seems to be about as well-adjusted and as sensible a fighter as I’ve ever interviewed.

Here’s an excerpt to show you what I’m talking about:

Crave Online: Matt Hughes seems to be coming off as kind of a jerk in this season. Do you think that’s accurate? What were your feelings on Hughes after the show?

Mac Danzig: It’s hard for me to judge Hughes. He was kind of up and down, like the rest of us. The entire experience was an emotional rollercoaster for all of us, even the coaches. I really didn’t like the way he handled his coaching when we started dealing with the losses, but I can’t judge him for that. He’s only human and everybody deals with stuff in their own way.

I mean, I flipped out on Blake and treated him poorly for no real reason, so there were times when I didn’t deal with stuff in the best way either. He may have let his rivalry with Matt Serra cloud his judgment and some of those practices were really negative and made me not want to be there. But he also has good sides to him and is very caring.

He wanted to win and he’s very competitive. Maybe he’s a better fighter than a coach. I guess that’s the best way I can say it. I still don’t really know him. The environment of the show was a synthetic environment. They call it “reality” because it wasn’t scripted, but it wasn’t real either. I have no vocabulary to explain how strange the whole experience was.

See what I mean? He’s even generous towards Matt Hughes. You can read the full interview at Crave Online.

John Kolosci: “I came down with a bronchial infection.”

October 05, 2007 By: Adam Morgan Category: TUF 6, The Ultimate Fighter 4 Comments →

If you watched last night’s episode of The Ultimate Fighter, you know that Team Serra fighter, John Kolosci, woke up sick on the morning of his fight and said he was having trouble taking deep breaths. Turns out he had a bronchial infection. From his TUF 6 diary at the Chicago Sun-Times:

The bad news is that I came down with a bronchial infection. I didn’t know that’s what it was until after the fight and I went to the doctor. I was a bit worried about my cardio, as I could not take deep breaths. I was hoping the adrenaline rush that comes with fighting would quell the symptoms for the duration of the fight. It did…

This makes his victory over Billy Miles even more impressive. He thought it was just a chest cold or a flu the morning of the fight, but a bronchial infection? That’s damn serious. John’s proving himself to be one of the real warriors of the season so far.
