While not yet a household name in mixed martial arts, middleweight Tim Kennedy has all the tools needed to go far in the sport.

Despite an impressive 9-2 record with notable victories over Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Dante Rivera, Ryan McGivern, and Hector Urbina, Kennedy has yet to breakthrough into the sport’s upper-echelon at 185 pounds.

The issue for Kennedy has been that since 2001, he has competed in just 11 pro bouts. His part-time fight schedule can be directly attributed to the fact that he’s Staff Sargent with the United States Army.

But things could be about to change for Kennedy, as the Army Times is reporting that Kennedy plans to go on terminal leave in the fall and eventually leave the Army. His enlistment ends on Jan. 5.

Kennedy apparently considered re-enlisting but the article indicates his bosses at Special Operations Command are currently preventing him from competing in civilian MMA fights. After five years in the military, Kennedy was put in a position where he has to make a choice.

ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has learned that EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler could be on the verge of finalizing a contract extension with the promotion.

ProElite.com has also learned that Lawler is expected to be involved on EliteXC’s inaugural card on CBS, believed to be taking place in May. A formal announcement from CBS in regard to the date of the first card and the fighters involved is expected to be made on Wednesday.

Lawler, 15-4, has been idle since winning the EliteXC middleweight title from Murilo “Ninja” Rua at EliteXC’s “Uprising” event on September 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had been scheduled to defend his ICON Sport middleweight title against Kala Kolohe Hose in December but the fight was canceled after Lawler reportedly sustained a biceps injury while training for the fight.

Sherdog’s Mike Sloan is reporting that EliteXC and ICON middleweight champion Robbie Lawler has torn tendon in his right arm and has been forced to sit out of the December 15 ICON fight card in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lawler was slated to face Hawaii-native Kala Kolohe Hose in a defense of the ICON middleweight title.

Lawler sustained the injury while training, and has received doctor’s instruction to halt activity for six weeks. So far no replacement for Lawler has been announced. Sherdog recently spoke with David Loiseau to confirm the rumor, and Loiseau would not comment on the topic.

ICON’s “Fearless” event can be viewed on Pro Elite for $12.95 on December 15 at 10pm ET/7pm PT.

The ever controversial Frank Shamrock, in an interview with Nokaut.com, elaborates on why he thinks he’s a bad matchup for Cung Le at this point in his career:

Nokaut: Will you be facing Cung Le, or is that a fight that you are saving for later?

Frank: I think Cung Le needs some more time and experience. I don’t think it is a good fight right now because I would just smash him and ruin his progress. Everyone is pushing for Cung because he has been very exciting so far. I think it would be a waste of money and it would crush him when I crush him. I would like to wait till 2009 for that fight. I don’t really know who is on the horizon right now. Robbie Lawler’s name has been thrown around, but I am good with whoever they decide.

As cocky as Frank is, he’s probably right. A lot of people, including myself, doubted Shamrock in the fight with Phil Baroni and he made us all look like complete fools. He smashed Baroni thoroughly, even calling his shots at one point.

Cung Le is a great standup fighter, but the level of competition he’s faced and the lack of experience in the world of mixed martial arts are two things working against him. The sanshou clinic he put on against Tony Fryklund was an amazing thing to see, but Frank Shamrock is no Tony Fryklund.

Robbie Lawler is a much better fight for Shamrock and one that I would gladly pay to see.

In a recent interview with Tatame.com, former UFC light heavyweight and current Cage Rage champion Vitor Belfort talks about what he’d like to do next following his decision victory over James Zikic at Cage Rage 23 in September.

Belfort said his “big wish” is to fight UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson but also stated he has a proposal on the table to fight Robbie Lawler for the EliteXC middleweight title:

“EliteXC that´s buying all the events, made a proposal for me to go to a lower category to face Robbie Lawler and fight for the big belt. Me and Spike, we are taking a careful look at this proposal of lowering my weight, getting this belt from Robbie Lawler…”

The interview has led to several Internet rumors that Lawler vs. Belfort could be the main event of EliteXC’s next scheduled card in November. However, the promotion currently has no plans to book that match for its next card. In fact, Lawler is expected to defend his Icon Sport middleweight title in December against Ross “Kala Kolohe” Hose.

Any future matchup between Lawler vs. Belfort could prove difficult to make happen. First, Belfort has competed as a heavyweight and light heavyweight through his ten-year MMA career. It’s not a given that Belfort can make 185 lbs. at this stage of his career.

Complicating matters further is the fact that Belfort was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for steroids following his unanimous decision loss against Dan Henderson at PRIDE 32 last October.

If Belfort could make the cut, a match against Lawler could take place in the UK or another portion of the world where MMA is not regulated. However, EliteXC could hurt its standing with NSAC by not honoring its suspension of Belfort. Even after Belfort’s suspension elapses, there’s no guarantee he’ll be reinstated because he did not honor his suspension when he elected to fight for Cage Rage.

I first came across the rumor that Matt Hughes has left MFS to start his own gym while reading Luke Thomas’ site, BloodyElbow.com. Luke first heard rumor on the Savage Dog Show. Since then this story has taken on a life of its own with a lot of people speculating over Hughes’ motives for starting his own gym.

I was able to speak with Monte Cox, Hughes’ manager (and the manager for Tim Sylvia, Rich Franklin, and a host of other big name fighters), and Jens Pulver, another client of Cox’s and a good friend of both Hughes’ and Robbie Lawler’s.

What I can tell you is this: Cox has confirmed that Hughes will be starting his own gym in the St. Louis area and Lawler has accepted a lucrative offer to help Hughes run the gym. The gym location actually isn’t that far from where Hughes currently resides. Meanwhile, Lawler and his wife will be relocating.

All the talk of insidious plots and bad blood appears to be erroneous though. I think Pulver said it best when he claimed that a lot of people on the Underground forum have “taken this whole thing six steps too far.”

First, there was some rumor that Hughes slept with Pulver’s wife. This is comical because Jens isn’t married and never has been. He said he doesn’t even have a girlfriend right now.

Second, Hughes doesn’t technically train full-time at MFS in Iowa. His family is based outside of Iowa and he primarily lives with them. He travels down to Iowa for training camps to get ready for upcoming fights. In fact, it hasn’t been established whether Matt has even left MFS. If Matt wants to continue to compete at a world class level he will need world class training partners. Lawler is a great guy to train with but Cox indicated that Matt will probably need more partners than just Lawler to get ready for Matt Serra on Dec. 29. It’s very possible that Matt is still in fact with MFS.

According to Jens, there is no ill will. It’s a family atmosphere down there and he’s surprised by a lot of what he’s hearing because a lot of what’s being written simply isn’t the case. Jens likened Matt opening a gym in St. Louis to Jeremy Horn opening a gym in Salt Lake. It’s nothing personal, it was just business because all the guys who train in Iowa primarily come from other parts of the country. It’s always been joked down there that people will grow up and eventually “leave the nest.” I think that’s exactly what’s going on with Hughes’ gym in St. Louis, and nothing more.

MMA is hot right now with more and more people looking to train at various levels. It makes sense for Hughes try to capitalize on the business potential out there and start up his own gym. I don’t think it’s much different than when Dan Henderson branched off from the Oregon location of Team Quest and set up shop in Temecula, Calif. Jens even mentioned that he’s looking to open a gym in Seattle and or Idaho after his career is over. When I asked him if I could quote him about that he said it was no big deal because he’s already talked about it with friends at MFS.

So to clarify, FiveOuncesOfPain.com can confirm that Hughes is starting a gym in the St. Louis area but it’s still not certain whether he’s leaving MFS altogether. Also, virtually all of the conspiracy theories out there that have surfaced are false.

Update: UFCjunkie.com is reporting that Hughes has indeed left MFS and will be starting a fight team of his own at the new gym called H.I.T. (Hughes Intensive Training) Squad.

MMAOnTap.com is reporting that Icon Sports middleweight champion and former UFC fighter”Ruthless” Robbie Lawler has signed a four fight contract with EliteXC.

Lawler is slated to fight in the main event of EliteXC’s next card on Showtime scheduled for September 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He will fight Murilo “Ninja” Rua for the EliteXC middleweight title.

This is an excellent signing for EliteXC. Lawler has improved a great deal since his first uneven run with the UFC several years back. He has a good chance of making Rua’s reign as EliteXC middleweight champion a short one.
