Why B.J. Penn will dominate Sean Sherk

May 12, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 84, B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk 28 Comments →

icfc.jpg Normally when I write these prediction-essays, I don’t bother to do so unless I’m feeling a certain way about a fight that I know a lot of people feel differently about. Otherwise, what’s the point of going to such great lengths to outline a prediction that the vast majority supports?

For the main event of UFC 84 on May 24, going with the headline “Why B.J. Penn will beat Sean Sherk” is just too obvious. Sure, Sherk is a legit fighter and has a chance to win. It’s just that going into the fight, I haven’t spoken to too many people who believe that will actually be the case.

As such, I’ve decided to go out on a limb and make things interesting by not only predicting that Penn will beat Sherk, but that he will do it in a dominant fashion that will be reminiscent of how he beat Jens Pulver and Joe Stevenson. Meaning, B.J. not only wins, but he wins big.

The more and more I analyze this fight, I just don’t see many ways for Sherk to win. For me, I see only two areas for Penn that are of concern. The first area is quite obvious, which is Penn’s cardio. However, since dropping to ‘55, Penn hasn’t rested on his laurels and his god given fighting skills. He’s spent more time in the gym because he knows he can’t take as many liberties when he has 15 additional pounds to cut.

Report: Penn and Sherk pass random drug tests

May 01, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 84, B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk 15 Comments →

Both UFC 84 main event participants have passed pre-fight drug testing, according to a new report by MSNBC’s David Avila.

UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn and former champion Sean Sherk were both tested in their respective home states by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the report indicates. Keith Kizer, the executive director of NSAC informed Avila that both fighters have passed their random screenings.

“It was good news. No positive tests,” Kizer is quoted as saying in the article. “There’s been nothing since mid-December. Hopefully that will continue.”

UFC 84 is scheduled to take place on May 24 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. In addition to the lightweight title bout involving Penn and Sherk, light heavyweight bouts between Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida and Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva are scheduled to take place.

UFC 84: Terry Etim vs. Rob Emerson? (Updated)

April 07, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: UFC 84, Jeremy Stephens, Terry Etim, Rob Emerson 4 Comments →

UFC.com has listed on its event page for UFC 84: Ill Will that TUF 5’s Rob Emerson will take on Terry Etim at the event.

This listing goes against a widely accepted report from MMA Junkie back in February that Etim would take on Jeremy Stephens. In my recent MMA blog travels I haven’t noticed anyone disputing Junkie’s report or mentioning a possible injury to Stephens that would have kept him out of the bout.

It must be noted that UFC.com never officially announced Etim vs. Stephens. It just seems strange to me that Stephens would announce that he has signed a bout agreement to fight Etim but then for the fight to fizzle out without anyone really noticing. Whatever the reason, it will most likely come out in the next few days.

Stephens’ “replacement”, Rob Emerson (7-6) is coming off a split decision victory over Keita Nakamura at UFC 81 back in February.

Update: MMA Junkie has now confirmed that Stephens had to pull out of the bout with Etim due to a “minor legal situation.”

Koppenhaver, Yoshida, Tan, and Kim added to UFC 84 undercard; 11 bouts now planned for May fight card

March 18, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 84, Jon Koppenhaver 1 Comment →

Two welterweight bouts featuring several prospects for the UFC’s 170 pound division have been added to the undercard of UFC 84 scheduled for May 24 in Las Vegas, UFC.com’s Thomas Gerbasi is reporting.

The bouts added include season six “Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show alumnus Jon Koppenhaver taking on Yoshiyuki Yoshida and Jason Tan squaring off against Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim.

Koppenhaver last fought for the UFC during the live season finale of TUF 6 on December 8. He recorded a third round TKO over Jared Rollins in a fight that was discussed as a possible fight of the year candidate by several pundits.

Yoshida, who has never fought in the UFC before, has a lifetime pro MMA record of 9-2, according to Sherdog.com’s Fight Finder. He has competed for both the SHOOTO and Cage Force promotions.

Thiago Silva to face Antonio Mendes at UFC 84

March 11, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: UFC 84, Thiago Silva 8 Comments →

Thiago Silva (12-0) is now set to face UFC newcomer, Antonio Mendes (14-2) at UFC 84 according to Sherdog.com.

Silva was originally meant to fight Rashad Evans at the May 24th card but when Mauricio Rua had to pull out of his scheduled fight with Chuck Liddell in June due to a knee injury, Evans stepped into his place.

The undefeated Brazilian, who last fought at UFC 78: Validation, in which he scored a first round TKO over Houston Alexander, will now take on a fellow Brazilian in the form of Antonio Mendes. Mendes went 9-0 in 2007 and fights out of Europe Top Team.

UFC 84 is headlined by a lightweight title clash between UFC lightweight champion, B.J. Penn and former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk. Intriguing light heavyweight matches between Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida as well as Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva will serve as co-main events.

UFC 84: Ill Will is set to take place May 24th, in Las Vegas, Nevada and is headlined by a UFC lightweight championship match between current UFC lightweight champion, B.J. Penn and former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk.

Machida vs. Ortiz and Silva vs. Jardine officially announced for UFC 84

February 28, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 84 18 Comments →

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported last night in his daily update that the UFC had planned a major announcement within the next 24 hours. Since Meltzer made that mention, it has gotten a lot of fans curious about the nature of the forthcoming news.

It looks like many UFC fans might have gotten their answer this morning in their e-mail boxes when the UFC officially announced that light heavyweight bouts between Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva and Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz have been signed and are scheduled for UFC 84 on May 24 in Las Vegas. Headlining the show will be a UFC lightweight title match between B.J. Penn and Sean Sherk.

That’s going to be an amazing show.

Update: UFC.com is promoting an announcement during today’s UFC 84 press conference in Columbus, Ohio. A special guest is promised and highlights will be shown. Could the guest be Mark Coleman, who will be inducted into the UFC’s Hall of Fame this weekend? Announcing that Coleman is being inducted wouldn’t be a big announcement since it’s already been made public and confirmed by the UFC. However, Coleman being signed to fight in the UFC again would qualify as a big announcement. This is just me thinking out loud.

Rumor: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 84

February 26, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: UFC 84, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou 18 Comments →

According to MMAWeekly’s rumors section, “The African Assassin” Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou will face fellow judoka Kazuhiro Nakamura at May’s UFC 84.

Sokoudjou burst onto the MMA scene last year with two devastating knockout wins over highly touted fighters, Antonio Rogerio Noguiera and Ricardo Arona in the now defunct Pride FC. However in his recent UFC debut at UFC 79: Nemesis, he was defeated by Lyoto Machida by 2nd round arm-triangle choke.

Kazuhiro Nakamura has fought a who’s who of Pride veterans, which is not a surprise considering that prior to UFC 76 it was the only organization he had fought for. He had mixed results in Pride going 11-6 in his time there. Just like Sokoudjou, Nakamura’s last defeat was at the hands of Machida at the UFC 76: Knockout.

If the rumor is true, UFC 84 is shaping up to be a very interesting and entertaining card. The event will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between UFC lightweight champion, B.J. Penn and former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk.

The rumored fight card is as follows:

  • B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk (UFC lightweight title)
  • Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida
  • Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine
  • Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura
  • Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva
  • Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic
  • Ivan Salaverry vs. Rousimar Palhares
  • Jason Tan vs. Dong-hyun Kim
  • Terry Etim vs. Jeremy Stephens

Wanderlei Silva will sign agreement to fight Keith Jardine at UFC 84

February 23, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 84, Wanderlei Silva, Keith Jardine 17 Comments →

According to Wanderlei Silva’s personal blog, he is signing the bout agreement to fight Keith Jardine at UFC 84. MMA Weekly has the translation from Silva’s blog:

“I’m leaving right now to sign the Jardine fight contract and you are the first ones to know officially,” said Silva on his website on Friday. “I am starting to train hard again to be able to get the victory.”

“This week I went to talk to (Randy) Couture and I’ve asked him to be my new coach. He was very happy with my wish and he will teach me some wrestling. I’ll be doing the fighting training with his athletes in a time where everybody train together.”

So there you have it. Looks like we can stop speculating now as it looks like this fight is almost a certainty. Certainly another good fight to look forward to and it’s no cupcake fight for either guy. It will be interesting to see how Jardine’s kicks will affect Wanderlei’s game during the fight. Will they have the same effect that they did on Chuck Liddell?

Liddell is a guy that likes to reset and then let his hands go and Jardine’s kicks always made him stop and reset. With Wanderlei, he has a style where he comes right at you so he may be willing to eat a lot of kicks in order to close the distance on Jardine. Let’s also not forget that Jardine was manhandled in the clinch by Houston Alexander. Silva’s clinch game is lightyears ahead of Houston’s.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Terry Etim at UFC 84

February 19, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: UFC 84, Jeremy Stephens, Terry Etim No Comments →

UFC lightweight prospects, Jeremy Stephens (13-2) and Terry Etim (10-1) will face off on May 24th at UFC 84 according to our good friends MMAjunkie.com.

Both fighters have agreed to the fight and will soon sign bout agreements.

Stephens has had two straight victories in the octagon after losing his UFC debut to Din Thomas at UFC 71. He decisioned Diego Saraiva at UFC 76 and most recently stopped Cole Miller in the 2nd round of their fight at UFC Fight Night 12.

Etim is coming off a decision loss to Gleison Tibau at UFC 75 and come from behind submission win over Matt Grice at UFC 70.

UFC 84 is set to feature a lightweight title fight between current champion, B.J. Penn and former champion, Sean Sherk.

BJ Penn Talks Steroids in MMA & Sean Sherk

February 13, 2008 By: Paul Balsom Category: UFC 84, B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk, UFC 15 Comments →

MMAWeekly posted an exclusive interview with newly-crowned UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn.

The interview covers a multitude of topics, including Penn’s training, work ethic, steroids in MMA, former lightweight champ Sean Sherk and more. When asked about his recent war of words with Sherk, Penn stated:

“For me, honestly, it’s not personal at all,” he stated. “The man was cheating. I called him a cheater; then he got all personal. So I think all the personal stuff is on him. He said this is the first time a fight’s personal and this and that and whatever. I couldn’t care less. I’m just going to go kick his ass.”

“How can you sit around saying you’re the champ, say the other guy’s the fake champ, and you got busted for [steroids]? We knew he was doing ’roids the whole time, and all this stuff, and about it’s nothing personal, he went and made it all personal. I was calling a spade, a spade.”

Penn and Sherk are set to square off in May at UFC 84 where we will see this war of words come to a head. Many people have criticized BJ Penn’s training and work ethic in previous fights. However, Sherk has been known for his remarkable ability to maintain a high pace of action. This will certainly prove as a formidable test for Penn in that respect.

Goran Reljic vs. Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84

February 08, 2008 By: Sam Cupitt Category: Goran Reljic, UFC 84, Wilson Gouveia No Comments →

MMAjunkie.com is reporting that Croatian light-heavyweight, Goran Reljic is set to make his UFC debut against Wilson Gouveia at UFC 84.

Reljic recently signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC and is undefeated after seven professional bouts.

Gouveia is coming off a come-from-behind victory over Jason Lambert at UFC 80 and is currently 10-4 in his career and 4-1 in his UFC career.

UFC 84 is expected to take place in May and will most likely feature a lightweight title fight main event between current UFC lightweight champion, B.J. Penn and former UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk.

Report: Yushin Okami and Evan Tanner set to fight in Montreal at UFC 84

January 19, 2008 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 84, Evan Tanner, Yushin Okami, UFC 2 Comments →

During a question and answer session with UK fight fans on Friday, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan revealed that middleweights Yushin Okami and Evan Tanner are set to face each other on April 19 at UFC 84 in Montreal, reports MMAWeekly.com.

UFC vice president of talent relations Joe Silva reportedly confirmed Rogan’s comments.

UFC 84 is scheduled to be headlined by a welterweight title match between incumbent Matt Serra and challenger Georges St. Pierre.

The UFC has yet to formally announce the UFC 84 card, but is expected to do so during a press conference in Montreal on February 4. At that time, additional matches could be announced.

So far rumored bouts for the card include Karo Parisyan vs. Thiago Alves, Mac Danzig vs. Mark Bocek, and Joe Doerksen vs. Jason MacDonald. Canadian fighters Patrick Cote and Sam Stout could be included on the card as well.

Georges St. Pierre is irritated with Matt Serra

January 16, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 84, Matt Serra, Georges St. Pierre 32 Comments →

Georges St. Pierre is apparently not too happy with what Matt Serra had to say about him after their last fight:

“We’ll see what’s going to happen next time. We’ll see if he’s as good at fighting as he is at talking,” Rush said, growing noticeably hot under the collar. “I have respect for him, but he has said a lot of things about me. I will let my fists do the talking next time I fight him. I’ve never answered him back. Next time I fight him, he’s going to feel it.”

“He said I was giving excuses. Which is bad. I shouldn’t say those things. But I did. He said, ‘aw Frenchy, go back to your red wine and hockey game.’ I’m a Frenchy guy … okay man, we’ll see next time. I never answered back to him, but I’m going to let my fist answer back next time. He’s not my friend. I had a good relationship with him. He’s a nice guy, he was a nice guy, until he crossed the line. Perfect. It’s going to be a different story next time.”

If I was Matt Serra I’d be shivering in my boots. This is way worse than when GSP told Matt Hughes “I am not impressed with your performance.” When GSP talks trash it flies so far under the radar because he’s so bad at it. He is such a gentleman that it seems really hard for him to talk garbage about other fighters. But this? This is GSP at his finest. “I’m going to let my fist answer back next time.” You hear that, Matt Serra? His fist!

Mac Danzig v. Mark Bocek rumored for UFC 84

January 14, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 84, Mac Danzig, Mark Bocek 4 Comments →

Looks like the winner of TUF 6, Mac Danzig, won’t be waiting too long to debut in the cage as a lightweight according to a report from The Fight Network today:

“The Ultimate Fighter” season six winner Mac Danzig will face highly-regarded Canadian Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Mark Bocek at UFC 84 on Saturday, April 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Danzig’s manager, Monte Cox, confirmed the bout.

The UFC is stacking this card with Canadian talent and that’s a smart move. Georges St. Pierre fighting for the unified title should be enough to make the Canadians buy tickets but putting more local talent on the card never hurts. Danzig should give Bocek a pretty good beating, however. His experience, skillset, and talent may be too much for the Canadian  BJJ black belt. Bocek does one thing great. Danzig does everything well.

Report: Karo Parisyan vs. Thiago Alves at UFC 84

January 10, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: UFC 84, Thiago Alves, Karo Parisyan 14 Comments →

MMA Junkie’s got the scoop:

Sources close to both fighters today told MMAjunkie.com that the fight has been discussed and that bout agreements are expected to be signed. The welterweight bout would complement UFC 84’s main event between UFC welterweight champ Matt Serra and interim champ Georges St. Pierre.

Well, I’ll give it to Karo. This isn’t quite the “layup” I thought he would get for his next fight. Alves is coming off a solid victory over Chris Lytle in his last fight and looked very good throughout the duration of the bout. It’s likely that Karo takes this bout but don’t underestimate Alves’ ability.

UFC fights that should and can happen in ‘08

December 26, 2007 By: Sam Caplan Category: UFC 85, UFC 84, UFC 83, UFC 82, UFC 4 Comments →

The UFC increased the frequency in which they held fight cards in 2007 and 2008 is looking as though it will be just as active of a year, if not more so.

January will feature two cards, UFC 80 in New Castle, England on January 19 and UFC Fight Night 12 on Jan. 23. February will kick off with UFC 81 on February 2 in Vegas and will be proceeded by UFC 82 on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio.

March could be an especially big month as Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s print edition of the Wrestling Observer that the UFC office in the U.K. is working on a possible card somewhere in England on March 8.

There will also likely be two shows in April, with UFC Fight Night 13 at the Palms serving as a lead-in to the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter and then either UFC 83 or 84 (depending on if 3/8 in England becomes a reality), possibly in Montreal.

The UFC 80 and 81 cards along with UFN 12 are pretty much filled with the card for UFC 82 filling up fast. However, there are still a lot of holes for the March and April shows that must be filled. Having some time to kill, I decided to put on my fantasy matchmaker hat and come up with some matchups I’d love to see on those cards that I believe have a realistic shot at happening.

Before I reveal my fantasy matchups, I must clarify that they aren’t even based on speculation. I am putting these ideas out there for pure entertainment purposes and am clearly stating that there is no validity to them. As such, it would be inaccurate if you took these ideas and said “Sam Caplan,” and or “Five Ounces Of Pain reported…” because I am not reporting anything.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, let’s get to it!

Andrei Arlovski vs. Mirk Cro Cop at UFC 83 (potential UK show on March 8th) - There are a two big reasons why this match shouldn’t happen. First, Arlovski has just one fight remaining on his contract and the UFC would possibly be helping his market value by putting him in a position to record a respectable win in a high-profile match. And second, Cro Cop badly needs a win and a fight vs. Arlovski could make for Cro Cop’s third UFC loss in a row.

But I also believe there are plenty of reasons why this potential match should happen. With so many big cards lined up in a short period of time, the UFC is not in a position to allow politics to get in the way of potential big money matchups. And Cro Cop vs. Arlovski could be a big money matchup in Europe (I also wonder what kind of business it could do in Chicago). Based on the striking styles of both fighters, it also has a chance to be a very memorable encounter.

Not to mention, Arlovski and Cro Cop have guarantees in the six figures. They get those guarantees whether they fight in a main event-caliber match or against a nobody on the undercard. The UFC might as well try to get the most for their money.

And if Arlovski wins, the UFC can try to downplay the victory by saying it came against a Cro Cop coming off two consecutive losses. But if Cro Cop wins, then they could possibly move him back into the title picture.

It should be noted that there is some reason to believe this match may have already been proposed. According to Meltzer, Arlovski accepted a fight that fell through that would have taken place on the potential 3/8 show. Meltzer did not reveal the opponent but described him as a “big name” and said if the match happened the UFC would have put Arlovski in a position “where his contract ends with a big win.” Sounds a lot like Cro Cop to me.
